The Ornithologist Bead Embroidered Necklace
An exotic bird, a scrap of patterned silk, flashes of turquoise and coral, and the gleam of old bronze—The Ornithologist has the air of something assembled from the contents of a particularly well-travelled study.
The illustrated bird forms the centrepiece, surrounded by intricate bead embroidery and crowned with a mottled turquoise cabochon. Patterned silk sweeps outward at the shoulders of the pendant, while deliberately unexpected touches of red, blue and ivory keep the composition lively.
Below, a generous beaded fringe introduces movement and a little exuberance, finishing with distinctive turquoise-and-black patterned drops.
The necklace measures 49 cm, extendible to 55 cm, with a focal piece measuring 17 cm long including the fringe × 8 cm wide.
The Ornithologist is colourful, eccentric and beautifully composed—a statement piece with the character of a treasured specimen from a collection whose catalogue has long since gone missing.
