The River of Lamentation

Not all tears are shed by the living.

Deep within the Greek underworld flows Kokytos, the River of Wailing. Its waters are fed by grief, regret, and the cries of souls unable to release what they have lost. Ancient poets described it as a place of mourning, where sorrow echoes endlessly through the darkness and every ripple carries the sound of a lament.

Yet grief is not always loud.

Sometimes it is a whisper.

A memory revisited in solitude.

A wound that never entirely heals.

Kokytos explores mourning, remembrance, and the strange beauty found within melancholy.

Water forms the heart of the fragrance. Cool and shadowed, it evokes the dark currents of the underworld river itself. Silent upon the surface, yet carrying immeasurable depths beneath.

Davana drifts through the composition like a fading memory. Complex and ever-changing upon the skin, it reflects the shifting nature of grief itself. Some days sweet. Some days bitter. Never entirely predictable.

Citrus peel drifts through the fragrance like bitterness carried upon the current. Tart and sharp, it recalls old wounds, unresolved sorrows, and the sting of memories that refuse to soften with time. Its brightness does not bring comfort.

It only makes the darkness around it more apparent.

Amber glows beneath the fragrance like distant lantern light. Warm and comforting, it represents the enduring presence of those who have been lost. Though absent, they continue to illuminate the lives they touched.

Black agar deepens the composition with solemn mystery. Dark, resinous, and contemplative, it evokes the hidden places of the underworld where memories gather and time loses its meaning.

Nag champa rises through the fragrance in gentle spirals. Sacred and meditative, it recalls funerary rites, prayers for the departed, and the ancient human need to honour those who came before us.

Dirt anchors everything to the earth. Honest and elemental, it evokes burial mounds, forgotten pathways, and the understanding that all living things eventually return to the soil from which they came.

Together, the notes create a fragrance that feels sombre, comforting, and deeply reflective. Dark resins and sacred incense mingle with water and earth, while bitterness winds through the composition like a current beneath still waters.

Kokytos is a fragrance of grief, remembrance, and endurance. It celebrates the river of lamentation and reminds us that mourning is not merely an expression of loss.

It is an expression of love.

For every tear shed upon the river's banks bears witness to something once treasured.

And that is its own kind of immortality.
