Bolgia 6 - Hypocrites 5ml - Cedar, frankincense, amber, geranium, leather and butterscotch.
The Weight of False Virtue
They walk endlessly beneath cloaks of gold.
Magnificent.
Radiant.
Worthy of admiration.
Yet beneath the gilded surface lies lead.
Heavy enough to crush the soul.
In Dante's Inferno, the Sixth Bolgia is reserved for the hypocrites—those who presented themselves as virtuous while concealing selfish motives, corruption, or deceit beneath a carefully maintained façade. Their punishment reflects the burden of their duplicity: beautiful cloaks that appear splendid from afar but become unbearable when worn.
Bolgia VI – Hypocrites explores the distance between appearance and reality, and the exhausting effort required to maintain a life built upon pretence.
Frankincense rises first, sacred and dignified. For centuries it has been associated with worship, ceremony, and spiritual devotion. Here it represents the image of virtue projected outward—the carefully cultivated impression of goodness, wisdom, and moral authority.
Amber glows beneath it with warmth and richness. Golden and inviting, it evokes prosperity, respectability, and the appearance of success. Like the gilded cloaks of Dante's hypocrites, it shines beautifully in the light.
Geranium introduces a crisp, almost formal elegance. Refined and orderly, it suggests polished manners, impeccable reputations, and the social rituals that allow appearances to flourish unchecked. It is the scent of saying precisely the right thing at precisely the right moment.
Cedar forms the structure of the fragrance. Strong, polished, and dependable, it evokes institutions, offices, temples, and positions of trust. Yet its smooth surface conceals what lies beneath, reminding us that stability and integrity are not always the same thing.
Leather emerges from the shadows with a darker character. Beneath the public persona lies ambition, self-interest, and private motivations carefully hidden from view. It is the concealed layer beneath the ceremonial robes.
Then comes butterscotch.
Rich, golden, and comforting, it seems almost innocent at first. Yet its sweetness mirrors the false warmth often employed by hypocrites themselves. Charm. Courtesy. Generosity offered not from sincerity, but from calculation. The sweetness is real, but the intention behind it is not.
Together, the notes create a fragrance that is elegant, sophisticated, and faintly unsettling. Every element appears admirable. Every element appears trustworthy. Yet beneath the polished surface lingers the suspicion that something is being concealed.
Bolgia VI – Hypocrites is a fragrance of appearances, pretence, and hidden motives. It explores the burden of maintaining a false image and the uneasy truth that virtue performed for admiration is not virtue at all.
Because the heaviest masks are the ones worn for too long.
